We look at the NZ vehicle fleet status data updated for the month of April 2021 [1]. We explore graphically the data for licensed vehicles only as these are the vehicles legally allowed on NZ roads. We believe there is great value in being able to visualise these data.
All registered vehicles by type
We chose to remove motorcyles, mopeds and other types of vehicles that make up a negligible proportion of the fleet. For the remaining data Passenger cars/vans made up 67% of the vehicle fleet followed by tailers/caravans at 15.7% and goods vans/trucks at 15.5%. The passenger and goods cars/vans/trucks are those vehicles that are classified as small with mass less than 3500 kg. The Pie chart shows a visualisation of the table listed below it in this section.
Passenger cars and vans
The table data in this section is limited to licensed cars and vans. The vehicles are grouped into periods of ten years and for each period the data are further separated into vehicle type. Passenger cars and vans are mostly petrol engined followed by diesel. The electric vehicles are too small in numbers to be visible on the graph but can be read off by hovering over the graph. The current passenger cars and vans are mostly from the 2000-2009 decade. The 1990-1999 period vehicles are smaller in numbers showing that more vehicles from that time have been scraped. The 2020-2029 period contains data for vehicles registered only in the last two years.
Goods vans, trucks and utilities
The table data in this section is limited to licensed vans, trucks and utilities that are used for the transport of goods and delivering of services. Here too the vehicles are grouped into periods of ten years and for each period the data are further separated into vehicle type. Unlike Passenger cars and vans the goods vans, trucks and utilities are mostly diesel engined. It is also interesting to note that the Goods vans, trucks and utilities fleet is younger than the passenger vehicle fleet. The largest block of these vehicles are from the 2010-2019 period whereas for passenger fleet the largest block is in the 2000-2009 period.
